They said It is running lean and it also blows white smoke occasionally.. The car seems to run better since replacing 4 coil on plug. But we want to fix the lean mixture how is this done?

I've got the same problem with my Corolla. I've taken it to a number of places and they say it's a fuel pressure issue. One mechanic recommended getting a new gas cap, which I did. No change. At this point I'm considering just breaking the light bulb because the light is so annoying. I have that problem too to my nissan urvan estate model check engine sometimes. Some times you may have to drive with scanner attached if it is a intermittent problem. There may be a lot of things to suspect.

Kausar Khan. The check engine light can mean a variety of things. If it is not blinking it is typically related to the Emission Control Systems. Take the car to an AutoZone, PepBoys, or any of the auto parts houses. They can plug the reader in and pull the code.

Anything can trigger it, it's best to have the code pulled and you can easily determine what the system is complaining about.

Rob neilsen. There are several guides on the web, Google "Toyota corolla maf sensor". Expensive electronics cleaner is not needed, Isopropyl alchohol and a Q-tip will work fine. You will need a scanner to reset the EngineCheckLight Autozone or a friend or I think it will automatically reset after about 40 times you start the car? This is a 10minute repair.

For some reason most professional mechanics do not know how to Google! Pete Grant. After replacing process was done, the engine check disappeared went off and could not start only cranking.

What is the solution to that problem? Please help. Why does my toyota corrolla sometimes have hard time to start and I have to spray starting fluid in the filter to start?

Show 1 more comment. Betty Lehman. My Diesel VW jetta occasionally has engine light problem. Took it to VW and received some suggestions from Wolfsburg to replace various wiring. Made my own determination that after a heavy rain, traversing puddles may cause engine light to turn on. When things dry out, light goes off. They say there is nothing else they can do. A few weeks later, I am doing some preventative maintenance here at home and find a cable with a plug on it coming from an opening from the back of the engine dust cover.

I also noticed that different hardware was used to re-attach the dust cover to the engine BUT the rear plastic hardware had been broken off and not replaced.

Anyway, I figured out where the cable was to be connected to and connected it. Nothing changed after it was connected but I decided to drive up to Quality Tune Up and express my feelings. The manager that was previously there was not there, but, I spoke with another man there about the cable. He looked up the service order by my license plate to confirm I was indeed there, then came out and looked at everything. He found nothing else out of order. He did say he would try and get the broken plastic hardware needed for the dust cover.

He never did NOW, after driving this car like this for a few months, it is now stalling on me while driving.

There is a slight jerk, loss of power, and the engine dies. Sometimes I can go a great distance without it stalling again. But today, it kept stalling numerous times. I finally got home.

I'm not sure what to do now, I need my car to get to work and I don't have a lot of money to spend on it. Not with a double mortgage.

I saw something else on this site where the MAF was changed and it solved someones problems. This is a new filter on this car, maybe I should pull it and clean it and keep my fingers crossed.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions that may help me? Also these cars often loose 02 sensors and catalytic converters because of the oil consumption they all suffer from. It doesn't effect the performance of the car, but the light certainly brings many of us worries if driving off to somewhere far that it may fail.

It's not very common for that to happen though, it's corolla and they are built to last. They are very reliable and durable as history has shown, but as over the years has gone, technology changes and do do the design in them especially with the complex computer system in the car making it more prone to annoying problems like the CEL.

Here are the very solutions solutions to fix the CEL. The Mass Airflow Sensor usually would need to be cleaned up. It's very easy to do, although you may have to do more research on the details, but you would not need to replaced it most of the time. You just need to remove it from the engine which is located next to the airfilter.

It's a semi-small elongated device that is attached to the filter and the electrically end needs to be unplugged and also removing two screws holding it in place.

If that doesn't work, chances are you need to replace the Oxygen Sensors. There are two of them, one in front of the car underneath it and the other is in the back underneath as well.
