Windows vista no ip address wireless
It only takes a minute to sign up. Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. I have 4 computers 3 of which connect wirelessly. The fourth, my wife's, is the computer which is connected via cable to the router. I used my computer to flash the firmware because my wife's is an older and slower computer. Now, the other two wireless computers connect fine but my computer will not connect. It hangs when trying to acquire the ip address.
I can get it to work though if I do a power reset of the router and do a repair on the wireless network adapter. It then acquires the ip address and remains connected until I shut down and restart. I removed the wireless network connection in Device Manager and rebooted and created a new wireless network connection; no luck. The wireless adapter immediately connected!
From the XP computer, you have to manually disconnect from the wireless network and then delete the wireless network from your list of saved networks otherwise it will keep auto-connecting with the "old" saved settings. I believe all the saved wireless networks are listed under the Properties of the wireless adapter in XP. Then you have to connect to it as if connecting to a new network and enter the key again you are using WPA2, right? You can check the box to Connect Automatically and it will save this new connection.

Will MS help us with this problem or just keep being silent on the issue? Wednesday, April 16, PM. Hi, Please refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Hope it helps.
Friday, April 18, AM. Friday, April 18, PM. Therefore, I would like to suggest: 1. Tuesday, April 22, AM. Anyone else agree? Thursday, April 24, AM. Thursday, April 24, PM. Someone there? Probably tens of thousands of users are currently experiencing the same problem, and exactly as LutherDaniel describes, a WLAN connection between a Vista machine and a WRouter that has worked fine for some time, suddenly changes from being a Private Network with internet access into an unidentified, public network with limited access.
Microsoft seems to have stucked its head in the sand completely. I fully understand your frustration LutherDaniel. I have the same problem, been encountering it on four different WLAN sites, including at work.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Tuesday, June 3, PM. Now I have my home network ssid identified as opposed to "unidentified network" I have 3 laptops and problem only happened on Vista OS after taking it to work connected to my work wireless "Bizzarreeee VISTA".
Wednesday, July 23, PM. Completely agree, I have had this specific failure in a lot of computers and sometimes flashing the modem or router firmware we could solve the problem. However we found a possible failure with vista systems because are unable to obtain a valid IP, using an static IP the problem has been solved.
I think that microsoft is not providing a valid solution for this failure, I agree that some modems or routers are incompatible with vista but we need an specific microsoft patch to resolve this problem, I hope that microsoft is working on it right now. A basic user without tech skills is unable to understand and resolve this problems.
So, if you have this problem please dont do a windows reinstallation, really the problem will continue, disabling IPV6 isn't a solution. I have several procedures that I already tried and didnt work. Probably flashing ISP devices or using an static IP, we have a temporal solution and awaiting for microsoft solutions. Saturday, August 30, AM. Hello LutherDaniel, While this thread is over a few quarters old, this came up in my search for troubleshooting the "local access only" problem, so I thought I would chime in for others reading, and hopefully you as well, if you're still hopefully not!
I recently bought an HP laptop myself, and had similar issues where the connection was inconsistent, whether it be having to use Vista's proposed solutions of acquiring an IP, resetting the wireless adapter, etc. This would work in the short term, but as you've probably experienced with your customers, the connection itself eventually became inconsistent during a seemingly stable connection and network activity would cease even when it still said it was connected to the internet!
Recently I looked up other troubleshooting avenues, wondering if it's the Wifi adapter. There was indeed an update for the drivers, and I performed it. The wifi adapter was restarted, and I got a connection immediately and it's been stable ever since! I do leave the computer on overnight, and I also know when a connection gets interrupted, and no such occurance has happened since I updated the Wifi adapter drivers. I have also done a restart and the connection to my Wifi router was made immediately when restarted as well without having to go through the whole fiasco of repeatedly restarting the adapter, acquiring an IP, etc.!
If your HP customers have this Wifi adapter that's an Intel Wifi Link AGN, updating the drivers is what helped me and the driver version that it was updated to was As this thread was created before that, perhaps Intel has since released drivers to resolve this very issue. It has at least resolved the issue in my case!
I cannot explain the technical issues in detail as to why in Vista there's such an inconsistency with the connection before the update, but it seems in my case, it was outdated drivers for the Wifi adapter having issues with Vista's networking. Good luck! Monday, February 16, AM. I've just spent the last day wrestling with this same problem.
The problem started on vacation while I was switching between my Sprint 3G internal card and public WiFi networks. Everything worked just fine until the last day, I received an IP Address conflict when trying to get on, and was never able to get on the Hotel's WiFi network again.
I was getting the 'Unidentified network' 'local only access'. I didn't have time to mess with it, so I just blew it off. I fought with it for awhile, looking over the solutions presented here, but nothing worked. I noticed in my scenario, my IP address was Also, there was no Default Gateway. So, I thought, I'll just configure my network manually with an IP and Gateway and fix the real problem later, which is when I found the problem.
Some how, my network had been configured to a static network address of I switched it back to get the IP address automatiacally and everything worked. So, the problem is that something caused the network properties of my WiFi adapater to switch to manual instead of automatic So, what process would cause the network connection to switch to manual mode without user intervention?
Saturday, May 9, PM. The only thing that works on our laptop is doing a recovery to a previous date I'm trying to figure out what updates are causing this malfunction becuase once midnight hits or an auto update happens the settings are changing and we loose our wireless and have to hardwire to our router.
Saturday, May 23, PM. One last thing it tells me that the wireless has been mysteriously turned off after and auto update!! So basically, there's no way for me to fix my computer since I don't understand the technical jargon listed here. I've tried some simple fixes that I've read about on numerous forums and had some hope when I saw how simple byip's solution was, all to no avail.
I'm considering smashing my computer on the pavement outside. I'd sell the computer, but I don't want to put anyone else through the same headaches I've had, the wasted hours sifting through forums, and the general incompetence of MS in addressing this issue. I'm buying a Mac. Monday, September 7, PM. In my case, it was just outdated Wifi adapter drivers that I was able to update and at the time I did have a stable connection, and then after the update, the connection stayed completely stable since then.
It did take considerable time for me to figure out that it was the root of the problem, after reading countless help threads, and trying a myriad of solutions, until I finally realized it was just outdated wifi adapter drivers.
Admittedly, if I still had problems after that, I would've been really upset by then. A solution is there, but can just be really hard to find. What gets really frustrating is that, in attempting some of the proposed solutions you hear about that end up not being the solutions, they sometimes can make the problem worse, bring up another unforseen issue because of some new suggested setting you put into place, and it just increases the frustration, which can really give PC users a big headache.
I'm not exactly an expert on the level of your company's IT representative, but I've been working with computers since I was a kid since the DOS days, so I've been around computers long enough to work through more issues than I can remember, and can understand most technical jargon, but even so, I do not like to attempt to make MAJOR changes to computer settings like say, changing registry settings, which you probably don't understand what that means, so I'll stop there in fear of risking further computer stability.
It takes a LOT of patience. Wednesday, September 9, AM. Monday, October 5, PM. Oddly enough, this worked for me. I was surfing the net and my wireless suddenly went dead with the "local access only" label. My PS3 connected fine wirelessly and my laptop connected with a cable.
I came across this, tried it, rebooted, and I'm on wirelessly now. Friday, October 16, AM. I've got to chime in here. I have just loaded the retail versions of Windows 7 on two computers. A wired dell desktop and a wireless HP laptop. I can experience the Unidentified Network on both systems. On the wired desktop it happens everytime there is a Windows update that requires a reboot.
If it is a soft reboot the network connection disappears and the unidentified one appears. Power it down. When you start it again, your old network is back and the unidentified network is gone. On the wireless laptop the culprit seems to be trying to hook up to a public network somewhere.
Once you do this and come back to your regular secure network, you are done.. Cannot connect - unidentified public network only. How can you clear these incorrect settings. On the laptop, a hard shutdown does not solve the problem. The only fix I have found to date is a system restore that goes back before the attempt to connect to a public network.
This is totally frustrating! Friday, November 13, AM. This thread still going This worked for me too! Really wierd Sunday, November 22, PM. Tuesday, December 29, AM. I just wanted to say a huge thanks for this.
The Bonjour service was the culprit for me, too. I should have thought along those lines after installing iTunes recently. I hope this thread is as much of a help to others Saturday, January 2, PM. Our laptop just got that antivirus live piece of garbage.
Not sure from where, but must have been a scholarship website, certainly didn't click on anything authorizing it to be installed on our computer. Could only get rid of it by doing a restore, but maybe it's still on it somewhere. Doesn't show up doing searches or going thru line by link looking through folders. Had to disconnect from the internet by switching off the wireless switch. Switching it back on does nothing. The wireless looks like it's on, but only connects locally, won't let the laptop connect to the net.
Any idea on how to turn it back on so we can connect to the net? Tuesday, January 19, AM. Tuesday, January 19, PM. Ok Guys This is what I have found to work for me. It is a bypass of the problem and while it does not fix the problem of the unidentified network, it will get you online will a full conection.
Click on details. The Mac Address is the Physical Address. Write it down and then close the details window. Click on Properties in the bottom left. Click on Properties that is just down right in that window. The Submet mask: is I hope that this helps a lot of you. Wednesday, February 3, PM. Alison Pleas people ignore this post I was away for the weekend, connected to friends wired network, got back and now my Home network is Unidentified, YAY and i'm running windows 7 I've tried all the solutions I can find and so far no luck.
I've actually run into this problem at work a couple times in the last week all on brand new laptops running windows 7. Thursday, February 18, AM. Have you uninstalled your anti virus Thursday, February 18, PM. All rights reserved. But i am still not fully connected to the internet?! So at the top on my network and sharing center window - it has you know the computer, the network, then the internet.
It is still saying my network is unidentified. My access is local only but my signal strenth is excellant. So basically still the same. TerryNet Terry. Joined Mar 23, Messages 81, You still have a hopelessly incorrect static IP configuration defined for the wireless connection. To configure a dynamic IP address on your Windows Vista or 7 computer: 1. Click Start. Select Network, then Network and Sharing Center, and click Manage network connections from the list of tasks.
Right click the connection of interest and click Properties. Select Obtain an IP address automatically. Click OK. Click Close. Ok so i tried the first thing you said to try- Ping google. Please check the name and try again. Please chech the name and try again. I did delete some of my internet history a while ago after the internet stopped working when i couldnt borrow my sisters modem anymore , but i dont think that should have affected anything?
Okay i will be logged out for 10 or 11 hours because at the moment its pm in Australia, and everyone needs their sleep cya.
Thats is the bluetooth - you need to set the network connection your using for wireless from the list as mentioned by TerryNet Follow TerryNets steps or the link I posted for vista - but its the same thing G'day I tried again the Configuration of my dynamic IP address and i musnt have done it right the first time, yesterday. But just then i tried again and my internet is finally working!!!
I cant thank you both enough!!! Have a good day Regards, Danielle and her laptop. As Seen On.
